Introduction to the Program
In the last decade enormous progress has been made in the design, synthesis, characterization, and applications of materials with atomic dimensions. A wide variety of scientifically and technologically interesting nanostructured materials have been synthesized and investigated. Investigations of the mechanical, chemical, electrical, magnetic, and optical behavior of nanostructured materials have demonstrated the possibilities to engineer the properties of these new materials through control of the sizes of their constituent building blocks and the manner in which these constituents are assembled. It is quite clear that through such nanostructuring, novel materials’ properties can now be accessed in a revolutionary manner.
These new developments are redefining the frontiers of materials science for the 21st century requiring new rapid and effective approaches for the education and training of diverse scientists, engineers, and graduate students in the rapidly expanding cross-disciplinary areas of nanomaterilas and nanotechnology.
The Ras Al Khaimah Centre for Advanced Materials (RAK-CAM) has established an Advance Studies Institute (ASI) to provide education and training in the cutting edge research of advanced materials. This intensive short course on “Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology” is the first course offered by the ASI of RAK-CAM.
